Congratulations to Bing Zhou for Successfully Defending His Dissertation Proposal

On November 11, 2023, GEAR Lab member Bing Zhou successfully defended his dissertation proposal and became a Ph.D. candidate. His research focuses on defining Responsible GIScience, which involves conducting GIScience research or deploying geospatial technologies that strictly adhere to a set of protocols addressing ethical principles, accounting for human values, and safeguarding societal interests. In his proposal defense, he presented four case studies to elaborate on the application of Responsible GIScience, including the use of large pre-trained language models to analyze social media data to support emergency rescue and disaster response, revealing the overlooked voices under COVID-19 triggered city-wide lockdown, etc. In the end, he briefly summarized the intellectual merits and broader impacts of his research.
