Congratulations to Joynal Abedin 🌎 on successfully completing his Ph.D. from Texas A&M Department of Geography! In Fall 2025, Joynal has joined the Department of Geography at Ohio University as an Assistant Professor of Instruction 🎉

Joynal is the fourth Ph.D. graduate from the GEAR Lab. With a deep commitment to addressing global climate disaster and environmental health challenges, his research leverages multi-source geospatial big data and spatial-temporal analyses to examine disparities in flooding and air pollution exposure, resilience, and risks across Bangladesh and US, identify local drivers and underlying mechanisms, while advancing community-based improvement strategies.

Joynal’s dedication has been recognized through multiple prestigious honors, including the American Association of Geographers Research Grant (2023), Cartography and Geographic Information Society Scholarship (2025), TxGIS Day Graduate Research First Place (2023), the TAMU Geography Department Outstanding Research Award (2025), and the Outstanding Teaching Award (2023) 👏
The GEAR team would like to express my sincere gratitude to everyone who has supported Joynal throughout his academic journey, especially his dissertation committee, Dr. Burak Guneralp, Dr. Heng Cai, and Dr. Galen Newman, as well as our wonderful colleagues and friends in Texas A&M Department of Geography, and the supportive Department of Geography at Ohio University!
Congratulations, Dr. Joynal Abedin 🌎! Thank you for your trust and hard work! Wishing you every success as you inspire the next generation of geographers and GIScientists 👍

Congrats, Dr. Abedin!
