The GEAR Lab is delighted to share that Joynal Abedin successfully defended his Ph.D. dissertation on Monday, October 20th, 2025. His dissertation, “Modeling the Dynamics of Climatic and Environmental Hazard Risks by Leveraging Geospatial Data Science,” sits at the intersection of urban geography, disaster resilience, and sustainable planning. His research quantitatively assessed multi-scale community exposure and risk to flooding and air pollution in both developing and developed countries through the development of a Geospatial and Risk-Informed Mitigation (GRIM) framework.

In September 2025, Joynal joined the Department of Geography at Ohio University as an Assistant Professor of Instruction. Congratulations, Dr. Abedin!

Heartfelt thanks go to his committee members, Dr. Burak Güneralp and Dr. Heng Cai from the Department of Geography, and Dr. Galen Newman from the Department of Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning, for their exceptional mentorship and support. You truly formed the best possible committee to guide Joynal toward a successful completion of his Ph.D.! Sincere appreciation to everyone who has supported and encouraged Joynal throughout his academic journey toward becoming an independent scholar.

Congratulations once again, Joynal! We look forward to hearing about your continued accomplishments in the future!
