The GEAR Lab at Texas A&M University was delighted to host Dr. Hui Luan, a spatial epidemiologist and spatial data scientist from UT Southwestern Medical Center (UTSW), for an invited talk focusing on uncertainty in spatiotemporal statistical modeling. His visit sparked vibrant discussions on cutting-edge spatial health research and methodological innovation.
Dr. Luan’s talk provided an in-depth look at how uncertainty influences the analysis and interpretation of spatiotemporal health data, highlighting the importance of Bayesian frameworks for capturing complex spatial, temporal, and demographic patterns. He also shared examples of how these methods can be used to support public health decision-making and inform geographically tailored intervention strategies.

As a leading scholar in spatial epidemiology, Dr. Luan investigates two central research questions:
How do health phenomena vary across space, time, and racial/ethnic groups?
What social, physical, and built environmental factors drive these disparities?
Drawing on Bayesian spatiotemporal statistics and GIScience, his work aims to advance probabilistic inference, promote the integration of spatial analysis in public health, and ultimately improve population health outcomes.

The GEAR Lab greatly appreciated Dr. Luan’s visit and the insightful conversations it inspired. We look forward to future collaborations in spatial health analytics and GeoAI-driven public health research.
