GEAR Lab had four abstracts accepted for presentation at the 31st International Cartographic Conference (ICC 2023). The conference, which brings together experts in cartography and geographic information science from around the world, will take place in Cape Town, South Africa from August 13th to 18th, 2023.
The U.S. National Committee (USNC) to the International Cartographic Association awarded travel funding to support two members from GEAR Lab to attend the conference in person. The accepted abstracts cover a diverse range of topics, including
Dr. Lei Zou: The impact of social isolation on sleep disturbances – evidence from geospatial big data during COVID-19.
Binbin Lin: Mapping the temporally evolved geographic disparities of public perceptions of COVID-19 through social media. (USNC)
Joynal Abedin: Mapping the geographically and temporally evolved flood risks in the contiguous United States. (USNC)
Bing Zhou: VictimMapper: A Platform for Harvesting and Visualizing Crowdsource Help Requests during Hazardous Events.

The 19th General Assembly of the International Cartographic Association (ICA) and the 31st International Cartographic Conference (ICC 2023) will be held in Cape Town, South Africa from the 13th to the 18th of August 2023. The event is being organized by the South African National Committee for ICA. The logo is indicative of the theme for the conference which is “SMART CARTOGRAPHY FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT”. The colors covering the globe are representative of the 17 SDGs, all below Table Mountain – a natural wonder of the world. The world-class Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC), located in the beautiful coastal city of Cape Town has been selected as the main conference venue.
