The GEAR Lab had a remarkable presence at the International Cartographic Conference (ICC) 2025 in Vancouver, Canada. Our members contributed through workshop leadership, impactful oral presentations, and award-winning research, reinforcing the lab’s commitment to advancing cartography, GeoAI, and disaster resilience.
🔧 Workshops Co-Organized
GEAR Lab members co-organized two high-profile workshops:
International Symposium on GeoAnalytics for Sustainable and Livable Cities
Co-organized with the ICA Commissions on Geospatial Analysis and Modeling, Location-Based Services, and Digital Transformation of National Mapping Agencies, this symposium focused on advancing geoanalytics for urban sustainability, livability, and smart city planning.
This workshop highlighted the integration of GeoAI, user-centered cartography, and advanced geospatial analytics to support disaster preparedness and response, engaging participants in methods for intelligent mapping in crisis contexts.
📖 Oral Presentations
Our team delivered impactful oral presentations that highlighted the breadth and depth of our research:
Yifan Yang: Perceiving Multidimensional Disaster Damages from Street-View Images Using Visual-Language Models

Dr. Debayan Mandal: Advancing Urban Flood Preparedness with 4D Geospatial Digital Twins
Dr. Mandal's Presentation Dr. Lei Zou: Geospatial Big Data and AI for Smart Humanitarian Mapping

🏆 Award Recognition
A special highlight was Yifan Yang receiving the Best Student Paper Award, recognizing his innovative work on Perceiving Multidimensional Disaster Damages from Street-View Images Using Visual-Language Models. This award underscores both the significance of his contribution and the GEAR Lab’s broader impact in advancing disaster geospatial research.

Reflections
From co-organizing workshops to presenting cutting-edge research and earning international recognition, the GEAR Lab’s contributions at ICC 2025 demonstrated leadership, creativity, and collaboration. We look forward to building on these achievements and continuing to shape the future of cartography and GeoAI.
Congratulations, Yifan!
