We are thrilled to share that Dr. Bing Zhou (lead author), Dr. Lei Zou, Mingzheng Yang, Binbin Lin, Debayan Mandal, Joynal Abedin, Heng Cai, Shuiwang Ji, Andrew Klein, and Hao Tian have published a new paper:
🎯 “Rapid Disaster Response and Damage Estimation with Social Media and Pretrained Large Language Models: Insights from Multiple Hurricanes”
🔍 Study Overview
This study explores how social media, especially X (formerly Twitter), can support fast and reliable disaster response. Although social media has long been used for situational awareness, extracting accurate and actionable information remains a challenge.
To address this, the research proposes a novel framework that leverages pretrained large language models (LLMs) to precisely classify fine-grained, location-based disaster messages in real time.
A multi-hurricane comparison (Harvey 2017, Irma 2017, and Ian 2022) demonstrates the framework’s ability to enhance situational awareness and support emergency response efforts.
